The members of Vitamen A have come together in much the same way as their music has materialized: as a harmonious blend of ingredients colored by a wide array of musical influences with an unlimited potential for unprecendented innovative expression.
The band drew together near the end of 1992 from a loose collective of poets, musicians, and artists who would meet, brainstorm, jam, and collaborate every week at a neighborhood bar in south St. Louis. Soon the componenets of the Vitamen A group began to crystallize and immediately established themselves as "the band to watch" on the local music scene. The group enjoyed a meteoric rise to recognition, claiming the top local band award as elected by readers in the Riverfront Times in 1993. Vitamen A then began touring clubs from Austin to Chicago with an original, upbeat, sound that transcended categorization. Their hypnotic compositions, outstanding musicianship and frenetic stage presence began to draw larger crowds and create a general buzz in the media. Then, in 1995, Vitamen A released "Perplexed", which was voted best CD release by the Riverfront Times for that year. After returning from an extended internation tour, the band decided to take a break to allow members the opportunity to pursue personal interests. They returned in 1998 with a new creative direction full of greater clarity and definition. Now the Vitamen A lineup represents some of the most versatile players on the St. Louis music scnene. Original members Tony Vrooman (vocals, acoustic guitar) and Tracy Lowe (vocals, guitar) are joined by cellist Jake Brookman, bassist Demitri Evdoxiadis, drummer Mike Garrett, and keyboardist/vocalist Mike Clement. Such a diverse group of artists makes it possible to successfully marry such equally diverse genres as funk, reggae, soul, and psychedelic rock. The end result is a sound that still defies classification and a live presence that connects the band with its audience, both musically and spiritually.
