Carl Schonbeck is a guitarist/singer/composer who writes material in the tradition of uncompromising writer-performers such as 1980s John Hiatt, Paul Kelly and Keith Richards. Originally from the Boston area where he began his musical career playing in bar bands during the mid-1980s, Carl has lived in Milan, Italy since the early 1990s. Since relocating to Europe he's had several songs covered by local rock artists, written soundtrack material for the popular Italian television program "Le Iene", and fronted a number of groups in various musical styles. In the early 2000s, after years of playing the Milanese club circuit with local notables such as Mr. Jones, Blanket Bomber and StellaVox, Carl's material came to the attention of San Francisco producer Scott Mathews (worked with John Hiatt, Roy Orbison and Steve Miller among others). Claiming he "heard something real" Mathews promptly offered to produce a CD in Milan. Backed by the Floreans (Mauro Florean on drums and Jimi Ivo on bass) and with a world class producer in his corner, Carl worked on and off during 2003-2004 recording "Tough Love", an 11 song record showcasing strong songwriting, gritty Costello&Parker approved vocals and a mixture of classic guitar styles. The record has received positive reviews in publications both in Europe and North America, while one of the record's standout tracks "Simona Surfs Nude" recently appeared on the Portugese Low Fly Records compilation "Cais Do Rock". At the same time, the track "Amateur Night" has become a popular request on several Live 365 internet radio shows. Carl is currently working on putting together a new band for his next project while recording demos of material for his second record.
