This queen of blue-eyed rock n' soul grew up loving equally the sweetness of a Memphis horn line and the raunch of an electric guitar riff, whether played by Muddy Waters, Keith Richards, Pop Staples, or Paul Westerberg. Teased her blonde hair into a beehive in honor of Ronnie Spector and never looked back. She's the long-time vocalist with the Saturday Night Live Band, who sang at SNL's 25th Anniversary telecast and Bob Dylan's 30th Anniversary bash at The Garden; appears on the Grammy-nominated A Tribute To Howlin' Wolf (with Taj Mahal and Lucinda Williams) and Charlie Musselwhite's 2002 Grammy nominee One Night In America; worked on a musical with Cy Coleman (who maintains her sense of timing is not unlike Peggy Lee's); duets whenever possible with blues legend Eddie Kirkland; collaborated with Marshall Crenshaw on a critically-acclaimed track for Labor Of Love: The Music Of Nick Lowe (Billboard suggested listeners skip the first 8 cuts and go straight for the Ohlman/Crenshaw duet); edited Andrew Loog Oldham's autobiography 2Stoned (named "Music Book Of The Year" by the London Daily Telegraph); worked with Bonnie Raitt, Ry Cooder and others on the Rhythm & Blues Foundation Awards---all the while continuing to torch clubs up and down the Eastern Seaboard in support of her recordings (Strip, Wicked Time, Radio Queen, and The Hard Way) with her band Christine Ohlman & Rebel Montez, featuring Eric Fletcher (guitar), Michael Colbath (bass), and Larry Donahue (drums). "I've come here tonight to set your souls on fire," she'll tell an audience. And she will.
Ohlman & Rebel Montez have been the darling of critics---check out this sampling of reviews: For THE HARD WAY "The first thing you notice is her tough, rousing, sexy voice" -(Charles M. Young/Playboy) "The number-one secret weapon in America's gal-singin' sweepstakes...It's now time for America to get very hip to Christine Ohlman, because musical treasures don't come along like this very often." (Cub Koda, Goldmine/All-Music Guide) "You can hit shuffle-play and come up with a winner every time, but major highlights include "Then God Created Woman," where Ohlman spits out the hook like Tina Turner fronting the Rolling Stones, making it the epic moment of the album and a rockin' delight." (CD Review/Performance Rating: 9) For RADIO QUEEN "I can vouch for this album; I was there, at WPKN in Bridgeport, on a snowy night in February, 1996. Live is where Christine and her group make their living, and it's where they really stand out. And I mean they stand out the way her white beehive 'do does." (Fran Fried/New Haven Register) "I host a weekly Saturday night show and ever since I got Radio Queen I am hard-pressed to find songs which cut to the core better (by any artist) than "Turn" or "Edge Of The World." (Dan Loftus/WCNI-FM) For WICKED TIME "Eric Fletcher's guitar work peppers the mix with tasty fills and sometimes surprisingly savage lead work, especially scorching on "I Idolize You." The team of bassist Michael Colbath and drummer Larry Donahue is as solid as they come, bringing to mind the economy of the Stax rhythm section." (Vinyl Junkie) "For every slick, over-produced, corporate-hyped marketing concept like Britney Spears or Mariah Carey, there's a real singer like Christine Ohlman; the Anti-Mariah, if you will. You may have seen her singing with the Saturday Night Live Band, all towering blonde beehive and funky but chic wardrobe. She's got a truckload of sass and a set of killer pipes to back up the attitude. We're talking total package here, kids." (Nine Volt/Highest Rating-4 stars) "A strong, smoky, sexy voice doesn't stop coming out of the speakers...You'll find reason to play it over and over again. Cool beehive hairdo, too!"
