The latest by Kathryn Musilek - Every Window In My House - is an amplified tangle of emotions and a smack to the jaw to anyone who thinks that the tired description "female singer/songwriter" does justice to her music or her attitude. Musically self-assured and volatile, Every Window is a diary entry soaked in heartbreak and loneliness. It bears the emotional scars of being 20-something, and broke in a transitory town full of library gods, party girls, and September boys. While the album primarily showcases Musilek's singing and songwriting - her powerful voice wraps around her own words like a well-worn glove - Every Window In My House is tastefully augmented by drum machines, trumpets, bells and dreamy keyboards that add layers of sounds without intruding on Musilek's sparse approach.

When her voice cracks and strains on the final words of the final song, "Listen," it's not from being tired or hung over or smoking too many packs of Camel Lights. That's the sound of someone believing what she sings about.
