Mother Tongue is an entity that can't be disputed. The band first encountered conception in Austin, Texas as an instrumental band until Davo (Bassist-vocalist) migrated from the wonderful city of L.A. and joined their ranks. The band then packed their gear and moved to L.A. to pursue the dream of being signed and exposing their music to the masses. There is usually no middle ground for people who know the band. There are fans that love the band and know what an amazing music making machine it is and then there are others who could care less for the one of a kind music it creates. Those people usually only have listened to their debut CD once and never have seen their live show. Trust me when I tell you that once you have seen them live you won't regret it. The only thing you will regret is not knowing about them sooner. The band has had it's share of rough roads through it's existence. Signed to a major label (Sony/Epic/550 Music) with a debut CD and one song in the TRUE LIES movie and on the soundtrack as well. They traveled the world presenting their music to the people. They were featured on MTV in England and had a documentary titled BROKEN filmed about their rise and fall during their tour with The Cult. In 1996 due to internal conflicts, poor management, and lack of label support the band opted not to record a second CD, fired their record label and disbanded. In 1999 the band was resurrected and had a clip on the MTV segment called YOU HEARD IT HEAR FIRST about their return in 2000. Their drummer Geoff Habba left the band in late 2000 to pursue other avenues but the mighty MT moves on and has recently put the final touches on their sophomore CD titled STREETLIGHT. All members work full time jobs recording the majority of the CD late at night at Christian,Davo's,and Jason Lee's house and various Los Angeles recording studios with Mario Caldato Jr. (Beastie Boys) doing the additional engineering and mixing of the CD. They secured a distribution deal in Europe, which resulted in a 20-date tour with their CD debuting on two different charts at 13 and 18 respectively. Members of Rage Against the Machine, The Cult, Cypress Hill, Dial 7 (who covered one of MT's songs on their major label debut),Uncle Owen,Strange Alliance, The Peak Show, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers can testify to their unique blend of furious funk sound. You can't really compare them to anyone because what they play is truly their own creation. Coming from my own personal experiences talking to many fans and reading various articles about the band these words come up to mind to sum up a vague label:
BLUES INJECTED PYSCHO-FUNK ADRENALINE FUELED ROCK
Their music is a portrayal of life and each song is a story in itself. The sound goes from quiet passionate moments to awe invoking power. They cover all levels of the sonic foundry of sound. So please take a listen to the CD not once but a minimum of three times before you make your judgement. Let the music grow on you and allow it to penetrate your thoughts and soul and you'll see why they have fans all over the world. If you do like this incredible band please turn your friends on to them and when MT comes to your town and bring them all to feel the vibe and see the intense show.
