Peter Walker
Unassuming would be a good way to describe Peter Walker's music. Genuine would be another. That's just the kind of guy he is. What you see is what you get and he plays it that way. Walker has an intangible quality sorely lacking in music today, the ambition to play, record, and have his music heard for no other reason than to have it heard. Not only did Walker back the recording of his first record, he elicited the collaboration of some of the most stellar and in demand musicians around; former Wilco guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett, soulful bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen of such talents as Beck and Blinker the Star, and drummer Joey Waronker whose credits include R.E.M., Johnny Cash, Beck, and Elliot Smith. Upon hearing Walker's demo, respected producer Joe Chiccarelli was immediately taken by the music and felt compelled to work with him. "Once I heard the demos, I was hooked," Chiccarelli says. "Peter has a unique and distinctive voice that's hard to ignore. He has his own way of storytelling that will always keep you engaged. The recording process was quick, fun, and smooth. How could you lose with players like Jay, Joey and Justin? They all truly identified with the songs and took great care to craft simple and supportive parts for Peter's tales." "Recording Peter's record was a real treat for me," says Meldal-Johnsen. "It was one of those rare experiences where people from different (musical) worlds get together and sparks fly. Putting aside the fact that Peter is the songwriter, guitarist, and singer, he really blew me away with his understated rawness and emotionality. His singing and guitar playing were undeniably the glue in the sessions. He made it very easy to be inspired and to inspire the other players to react in the right way to a particular song. I found a real ease and lack of pretense in going for a certain texture or emotional context, unlike so many artists. I felt no sense of fear in Peter to let the songs speak their true nature." Waronker adds, "I really enjoyed the songs, and the original song-writing approach. These are a collection of very true songs. I'm glad we took the organic approach to recording them; Joe really has a way of capturing every nuance and interplay between musicians when recording this way. I feel like we were able to get inside these songs and create a wonderful musical landscape for the words and melodies." Walker was born in Boston, November 1973. On his older brother's Yamaha kit down in the basement, he learned his first rock beats. Like a dutiful younger sibling, Peter listened to the Beatles, Zeppelin and Stones records his brother brought home, and was inspired to take his basement drumming to a higher level. He was in his first garage band by 5th grade, sang in church choir, and took five years of piano lessons before his family moved to California. Peter was writing and recording his own music by age 16, soon developing his own style. His music is easy to identify with -- the sound embodies spirit, restlessness, will and certain peacefulness. Each song is Walker's own but easily invites you to come inside and listen. Throughout high school, playing live became commonplace and then in college gigs in Colorado and up and down the West coast nourished Peter's stage presence. In 2000, Peter put together the band Low Poster, made a five song demo, and began gigging. The recording of a full-length CD provided the incentive for the band to tour in fall, 2002. After garnering adoring fans from Albuquerque to New York City Peter decided his next step was more personally focused and began solo plans for the recording of his latest record. Now, with twelve new songs recorded with an exceptional band and producer, Walker is ready to be unleashed on the music-listening public. With such artists as John Mayer, Ryan Adams, & Jon Brion bringing the singer-songwriter realm to recent public acclaim, Peter Walker is not only poised to enter that realm, he's going to blow the door open.
