Rudy has his first taste of real Rock n' Roll at the age of ten, when his Uncle Ray took him to see the great Fats Domino in Phoenix. I guest you could credit Uncle Ray with giving Rudy his start in music. A the age of fourteen, he really became interested in music when he first listened to an old, old record by Lightin' Hopkins called "Give me back that wighat I bought you babe and let your doggone head go bald". Yes that was the name of that tune. And would you know it, just about that time, this older, black man and his son started coming around the park across the street. We became good friends and started learning from him. He had a real picurliar way of picking the guitar. He had steel pick that wraped around the tips of his fingers. At the age of seventeen, Rudy joined his first group, Soukie Charles and the Night Owls. The group soon evolved into The Jokers and then The Soulsetters. This was a great time for music in Phoenix because in the middle and late sixties there were few group in town and Rudy found himselve playing behind and meeting many great artist like Mavin Gaye, Ike & Tina Turner and B.B. King. Rudy recalls an interesting story about the legendary O'Jays: "In 1965 as a young teenager I did what most teenagers at the time did and that's put a colorful and distinctive name on the back sides of your car. I put the word "Laterrrrrr" which was the sign-off signature for local favorate and soon to be legendary, DJ Eddie O'Jay. One day this person came up next to my car and flagged me down. We talked for awhile and introduced himselve, told me the story about a group that had taken his name and would called themselves "The O'Jay". Now I am in the middle of a search to find the great Eddie O'Jay. The music business is a very dificult one in that one's biggest concern is not whether or not you necessarily have talent or whether or not your material good enough, but rather how well you can spot the music industry cutthroats. Rudy didn't have to concern himself to much with this until just recently. Although Rudy has been a musicain for well over thirty-five years, he only started writing extensively three to four year ago.
In the past twenty-five or so years, Rudy has worked as a network administrator for a civil engineering firm, as a licensed private commercial pilot, state licensed life & health insurance agent, loan agent for CitiGroup, founder and President of M.A.Y.A, a scholarship program for inter-city kids, and now the most challenging move of all, Songwirter. Rudy says, "Songwriting was the most difficult thing I ever tried with little or no suscess until now. "I believe my music will now be my legacy."
