One of the most experienced African-American players of the mbira (thumb piano) is also one of the most exciting World Beat musicians in the U.S. Jomo is an innovator and player of the only chromatic, electric mbira of its kind, based on the ancient African mbira. This CD is performed using his “kalimba†style mbira. Warning, this is not the traditional music you are used to hearing on this instrument!
Jomo’s compositions experiment with flavors that encompass musical styles from Eastern Africa such as â€Meeting of the Ancestors,†recorded with balafon and percussion master Yaya Diallo, to “Marimbula Knight†a jazzy excursion into the rain forests of South America. This project contains compositions rooted in R&B, hip-hop, jazz and new age, all with Jomo’s signature African/Eastern flavor.
