The Psalms are divided into 5 groups, paralleling itself with the 5 Books of Moses or the Torah (Jewish Study Bible, p.1280). The five categories are
* The Psalms of David 1-41
* Psalms of Korah and Asaph 42-72
* More Psalms of Korah and Asaph 73-89
* Untitled Psalms 90-106
* Psalms for Pilgrimages to the Temple 107-150
The Psalms, or poetic prayers, were used liturgically during the time of the Second Temple and perhaps during the late part of the First Temple.
The form of the psalms includes the use of repetition, imagery and parallelism. Psalms were either written for praise, complaints or pleas for help and/or thanksgiving.
My purpose in creating this collection was to give the psalms music; to bring their spirituality into the present time and to create songs of worship that were accessible.
As a poet, I tried to maintain the integrity of the original text. I pulled images and ideas not only form the original psalm, but also from more ancient texts. As a musician, I wanted to create music reflected the ancient and modern, with an eye toward timelessness. And as a woman I wanted to bring the images of the Shekhinah, Shabbat and the Holy Spirit in balance with other images of the Divine.
Song seven, "It Would Be Enough" was the exception to the Book of Psalms. This song was written based upon the Song of Songs.
Enjoy the music and let it inspire you to praise, dance, and sing a new song.......
